After more than three decades of service and 25 years of leading the Department of Orthodontics, Steven J. Lindauer, D.M.D., M.D.Sc., has been appointed Emeritus Professor, exemplifying his excellence and dedication to VCU School of Dentistry. 

An Emeritus Professor at VCU is a distinguished, retired faculty member recognized for exceptional service, dedication and scholarship, retaining an honorary title and certain university privileges.

This comes after Lindauer retired in October of 2025 as the longest tenured chair in the history of the Department of Orthodontics. 

Lindauer helped shape the VCU Orthodontics' national and international reputation, mentoring generations of residents, and advancing the specialty through his research, teaching and vision.

During his time as chair, the department has graduated more than 100 residents. When asked what impact he hopes to have had on his residents, he reflected:

“The most important thing in your career is maintaining an ethical practice as an orthodontist—and being a good example. I’ve tried to teach them to truly care for their patients, to always do what’s best for them. When you treat people that way, you're going to be successful in life.”

In October, the school community gathered together to celebrate the extraordinary career of Lindauer and wish him well in his retirement. Students, faculty, staff and residents enjoyed cake and ice cream and shared stories and well wishes with him. 

The remarkable turnout and palpable enthusiasm throughout the celebration were a true testament to the lasting legacy Dr. Lindauer leaves on the school.

While Lindauer’s final day as chair was Friday, October 31, 2025, he returned the following Monday, November 3, to serve as a volunteer faculty member in the clinic. He will continue to serve in that role once a week.

“Under new leadership, the dental school and department will continue to evolve with fresh ideas, fueling a path toward the future of dentistry and orthodontics,” said Lindauer. “I look forward to watching this happen and being there to help in any way that I can."
