Addressing access to oral health care in Virginia
Aug. 4, 2023
When unfortunate circumstances meet unexpected opportunities, great solutions can be found. This fortunate circumstance presented itself last week as our friends, colleagues, students, staff and faculty of VCU School of Dentistry participated in the 2023 Wise Mission of Mercy project.
With the support of the Virginia Dental Association Foundation and others, the VCU team of faculty and students helped to transform the UVA Wise Convocation Center into a fully functional dental clinic where approximately 500 people received free dental care over two days. With remarkable talent and heartwarming care, we addressed the oral health care needs of so many in need. A challenging unmet need for oral health care still exists in our rural communities and the MoM clinic is just one step in addressing this need.
VCU School of Dentistry is committed to finding solutions to access to oral health care throughout the Commonwealth and educating our students of this need through such service learning experiences. Please join me in thanking all of the VCU volunteers who travelled last weekend to Wise County to care for the folks seeking care at this year's MoM event.
