Dr. Duane Schafer appointed to American Board of Pathology's Test Development and Advisory Committee
In a recent announcement, the American Board of Pathology (ABPath) has appointed Dr. Duane Schafer, chair of the Department of Oral and Diagnostic Sciences at VCU School of Dentistry, to its Anatomic Pathology Test Development and Advisory Committee (TDAC). As the only dentist on the otherwise all-physician committee, Schafer's appointment underscores his expertise in the field.
ABPath’s TDACs are responsible for developing and reviewing the ABPath certification exam questions that assess and certify a physician’s education, knowledge, experience, and skills in order to provide high-quality care in the pathology profession.
As a member of the Test Development Committee, Schafer will play a crucial role in shaping the future of pathology examinations. His insights and input will help ensure that these assessments accurately reflect the evolving landscape of the discipline, maintaining the highest standards of quality and relevance.
Commenting on his appointment, Schafer expressed gratitude for the opportunity to serve on the committee. “It’s an honor to be chosen for this role and entrusted with the responsibility for helping to set the standards for all physicians specializing in pathology,” said Schafer.
“The members of our Test Development and Advisory committees are experts in their respective fields. These individuals are instrumental in assessment development, the setting of standards, and provide guidance regarding the current state of Pathology. The appointment of an individual to a test committee is a recognition of their expertise and their contributions ensure the integrity and relevance of board certification,” stated Gary W. Procop, MD, CEO of the American Board of Pathology, in a press release published on ABPath’s website.
Schafer is a Fellow of the American Academy of Oral and Maxillofacial Pathology and is certified by the American Board of Oral and Maxillofacial Pathology. A former captain in the United States Navy, Schafer earned his Doctor of Dental Surgery degree from The Ohio State University, completed a residency in oral and maxillofacial pathology from the Naval Postgraduate Dental School and completed a fellowship in otolaryngic pathology at the Armed Forces Institute of Pathology.
