Dr. Eser TüfekçiDr. Eser Tufekci named interim chair of Department of Orthodontics
Eser Tüfekçi, D.D.S., M.S., Ph.D., M.S.H.A. has been appointed as interim chair of the Department of Orthodontics, following the retirement of longtime chair Steven Lindauer, D.M.D., M.D.Sc.
Dr. Tüfekçi, who has been at VCU and a member of the department since 2002, brings extensive experience and leadership to the role.
Over the past two decades, she has served as a mentor to students, residents and faculty while working closely with Dr. Lindauer and Dr. Bhavna Shroff to build a nationally recognized residency program and curriculum. Their collaborative efforts have helped establish the department’s strong reputation internationally.
“Dr. Tüfekçi has long demonstrated her commitment to the VCU School of Dentistry’s culture of care and academic excellence,” said Lyndon Cooper, D.D.S., Ph.D., dean of VCU School of Dentistry. “With her exceptional qualifications and leadership, I am confident she will guide the Department of Orthodontics successfully through this transition. I look forward to seeing her excel in this interim role and to the department continuing to build on its strong momentum and thrive under her direction.”
With her appointment, Dr. Tüfekçi is excited to continue advancing the department’s mission of excellence in orthodontic education, research and patient care.
“Dr. Lindauer did an amazing job leading this department and I am aware that I have big shoes to fill,” said Tüfekçi. “I want to sustain our success while strengthening relationships with other departments. By fostering greater collaboration and enhancing these connections, I am confident we will achieve continued success for the dental school.”
A graduate of Istanbul University’s Faculty of Dentistry (D.D.S.), Dr. Tüfekçi went on to earn her MS and PhD in Dental Materials and Oral Biology from The Ohio State University. She later completed an Orthodontic Certificate at the University of Minnesota and an MSHA in Health Administration from Virginia Commonwealth University.
Tüfekçi credited her time at Ohio State as a pivotal point in her career.
“When I got to Ohio State, I was out of my homeland for the first time. My mentor, Professor William Brantley took me under his wings. He took a chance on me and gave me that opportunity as a Master's and Ph.D. student. I owe where I am today because of him.”
Tüfekçi is Board Certified by the American Board of Orthodontics and has been widely recognized for her contributions to education, research, and leadership. She received the Excellence in Orthodontic Education Award from the Southern Association of Orthodontists, honoring her impact on the field.
She has served as Delegate to the American Association of Orthodontists House of Delegates, Past President of the Virginia Association of Orthodontists, and Member of the American Association of Orthodontists Council of Scientific Affairs. In addition, she was selected for the 2017 SAO Leadership Development Program and received the 2019 WISDM Professional Achievement Award, which celebrates female faculty members who demonstrate exceptional achievement in their profession.
Tüfekçi expressed her gratitude to Lindauer for the mentorship and support that prepared her for this new role.
“When I first interviewed, his energy was contagious and he was so approachable. I remember thinking, if I have to choose a boss, this person is gonna be my boss,” she recalled. “He was wonderful to work with. Whenever I sought opportunities to grow—whether it was attending a leadership conference or pursuing training—he encouraged me, nominated me, and made sure I had the resources I needed. That support truly prepared me for this moment.”
Now, stepping into this leadership role, Tüfekçi is excited to lead.
“Leadership is about creating an environment where success can flourish,” said Tüfekçi. “I believe leaders must lead by example, bring people together, and empower them to reach their full potential. My enthusiasm and energy are dedicated to fostering that empowerment, because when people feel supported, they shine. To me, leadership is not about standing alone, but about working as a team with a shared focus on making our department, and ultimately the dental school, thrive.”
