VCU School of Dentistry has named Lindsay Tierney, Ed.D., M.S., as assistant dean of student services, effective February 25, 2025.

“Dr. Tierney brings exceptional experience and expertise in student affairs in higher education and a deep commitment to student success to the role of assistant dean of student services,” said Lyndon Cooper, D.D.S., Ph.D., dean of VCU School of Dentistry. “I am confident that her leadership will further strengthen an inclusive and supportive environment resulting in student success and educational and institutional excellence.”

“It is with great excitement and gratitude that I step into this role at VCU School of Dentistry,” said Tierney. “The role of assistant dean of students services is both an honor and a responsibility that I embrace wholeheartedly. For nearly two decades now, I have funneled my passion for student success into a variety of academic environments, creating actionable initiatives that allow students to be successful academically and personally. I look forward to fostering an environment where every student feels supported and empowered to thrive.”

Most recently, Tierney served as the Student Success Coach at VCU School of Nursing. She also served as an adjunct instructor at VCU, teaching student success and learning strategy courses. Before joining VCU, Tierney served as assistant dean of students and the director of disability resources & ADA compliance officer at Longwood University.

Tierney’s area of research covers the spectrum of student success in higher education, including such topics as academic coaching in nursing education, student self-determination and its impact on academic progress, as well as disability access and accommodation usage in post-secondary settings.

As assistant dean of student services, Tierney will oversee and manage all student-related programs and activities for dental students and dental hygiene students. She will also create inclusive support systems that empower students to succeed and thrive at VCU and beyond.

She will also work collaboratively with the school's leadership, including associate deans, department chairs, program directors and collaborate with colleagues across the University and broader health system.

Dr. Tierney earned her bachelor’s in psychology and education from Lynchburg College. She completed her master’s in Rehabilitation Counseling from VCU and graduated with a doctor of education (Ed.D.) degree in Educational Leadership from the University of Lynchburg.

Tierney said she is looking forward to building meaningful connections with students, faculty, and staff at VCU School of Dentistry.

“Supporting students through their journey in dental education, ensuring they have the guidance and skill-development needed to succeed, as well as partnering with the faculty and staff to create and maintain an inclusive and supportive learning environment that empowers both the students and educators alike,” said Tierney. “I am thankful to Dean Cooper, Dr. Jeff Johnson, who led the search committee, and everyone who was involved in the search process for their warmth, respect and commitment to the importance of this work. I am eager to contribute and make a meaningful impact!

Tierney is succeeding Mary Pettiette, D.D.S., who has served as interim associate dean of student services since January 1, 2025.
