Dr. Sarah GlassDr. Sarah Glass receives WISDM Award for remarkable achievements and contributions to dentistry
Sarah Glass, D.D.S., has built a career rooted in curiosity, mentorship, and a commitment to advancing dental education, an impact for which she was recently recognized with the 2026 WISDM Professional Achievement Award.
“It was truly humbling,” said Glass. “When I look around at the incredible faculty at VCU, many of whom I deeply admire, it is both surprising and meaningful to be recognized in this way. What makes it especially impactful is knowing that this award reflects not only individual accomplishments, but also the relationships I have built along the way. That makes it feel very personal and deeply rewarding.”
The Women in Medicine and Science Program has been dedicated to furthering and honoring the careers of women in medicine and science fields since 1992. WISDM, which stands for Women in Science, Dentistry and Medicine, is one of the four components of this program. Each year, students, faculty, and staff gather for the annual WISDM Leadership Conference on April 24 to honor the year’s award recipients.

“The WISDM Award is important because it recognizes not only professional achievement, but also mentorship, leadership, and the impact we have on others,” said Glass. “It highlights the importance of a supportive and inclusive academic community. By celebrating faculty who invest in others, it reinforces the values that help institutions grow and thrive.”
Glass is a board-certified oral and maxillofacial pathologist and associate professor with tenure at VCU School of Dentistry. She currently serves as interim chair of the Department of Oral Diagnostic Sciences and laboratory director of Oral Diagnostic Services. A School of Dentistry alumna, she completed her three-year oral and maxillofacial pathology residency at New York-Presbyterian Queens before returning to VCU in 2018.
“I have always been motivated by understanding the ‘why’ behind disease,” said Glass. “Becoming an educator felt like a natural extension of that since teaching allows me to share that curiosity with others. I enjoy helping learners navigate uncertainty, develop clinical reasoning, and build confidence in approaching complex cases.”
Known for her engaging and clinically relevant teaching, Glass inspires curiosity in the diagnostic process. She has developed innovative curricula, led faculty initiatives, and mentored students and residents in clinical care and research. A strong advocate for professional growth and interprofessional collaboration, Glass is dedicated to creating a supportive and inclusive environment for learners and colleagues alike.
“Dr. Glass is a faculty member who exemplifies the very best of our profession,” said Jeff Johnson, D.M.D., M.P.H., Ed.D., interim dean of VCU School of Dentistry. "She is an exceptional teacher, a trusted mentor, and a thoughtful leader who elevates those around her. As a colleague and friend, she brings integrity, generosity, and a genuine commitment to others, leaving a lasting and meaningful impact.”

It takes a village to shape a career and educate others, Glass said. She credited the community within VCU School of Dentistry for boosting her and supporting her so that she can continue to grow and learn.
“I am very grateful to my mentors,” said Glass. “They have shaped how I think about growth, and their guidance has had a lasting impact on me. They have also made me feel seen in important moments of my career. I appreciate my colleagues. The environment at VCU is collaborative, and I value the daily discussions, shared problem solving, and support that come from working alongside them.”
The learners at VCU School of Dentistry, whether they be students, residents, or fellow researchers have also deeply impacted her and continued to inspire her.
“They motivate me every day. Their questions often challenge me in ways that go beyond content,” said Glass. “They help me think more clearly about purpose and direction, and they give weight and meaning to the trajectory of my work as an educator and clinician.”
