Faculty Feature: Meet David Collins, M.D.H., R.D.H.

David Collins joined VCU School of Dentistry in August 2025 as a full time assistant professor of dental hygiene. He received his BS and MS in Dental Hygiene from the Ohio State University. After a career in private practice, he made the shift into academia, where he hopes to further research efforts and support student success.

What impresses you most about the VCU School of Dentistry?

"Having had the opportunity to work in various institutions, I am particularly impressed by the caliber of faculty and the high standard of education at VCU Dental Hygiene. The program not only meets accreditation requirements but also excels in preparing competent healthcare professionals who demonstrate both leadership and critical thinking skills."

Why did you choose to be an oral health provider and educator?

"Teaching has always been my original passion, and my graduate studies provided the opportunity to merge that passion with my growing interest in dentistry. My motivation to enter the dental field is rooted in personal experiences with limited access to care during childhood—where treatment was only sought when pain was present. It was a dental hygienist who first made a lasting impact on me, offering both compassion and the education I needed to begin rehabilitating my oral health after years of neglect."

Can you describe your goals at VCU School of Dentistry?

"Returning to a university setting has long been a professional goal of mine, along with a desire to deepen my understanding of the research process. More broadly, Virginia continues to face significant healthcare disparities, and I believe contributing to the advancement of dental hygiene—particularly through expanded functions—can play a meaningful role in addressing those challenges and making a lasting societal impact."

What is your favorite part of your job?

"Having the opportunity to leave a lasting impression on the next generation of healthcare providers—shaping their growth with empathy and a commitment to lifelong learning—is a true privilege."
