Faculty Feature: Meet Jennifer Wadiak, D.D.S.

Jennifer Wadiak, D.D.S., joined VCU School of Dentistry as an assistant professor in the Department of General Practice in September 2024. She is a proud alum, graduating from VCU School of Dentistry in 1999.

Wadiak started her career in private practice in Fredericksburg, VA alongside her husband. They ran their practice for 23 years before Wadiak decided to enter academia. She became an assistant professor at University of Alabama Birmingham School of Dentistry in 2021 and interim director of UAB Dentistry Comprehensive Care Clinic in 2023. In addition to serving as a mentor for dental students, Wadiak was able to be closer to her children, who attended University of Alabama in Tuscaloosa.

Why did you choose to come to VCU?

"As a graduate of VCU (class of '99) this feels like a homecoming. Virginia has always been my home state and I am excited to return to the area. VCU SOD has an impressive reputation for training dentists who graduate with the skills and knowledge to make immediate impacts on the communities they will serve. I am excited to contribute to this program and share my passion for dentistry and patient care with the next generation of dental professionals."

What sparked your interest in academia?

"I enjoyed a long and fruitful career in private practice, serving the community of Fredericksburg, VA and the surrounding areas for over 20 years. Even as a dental student, I knew that returning to dental education would be a long-term career goal. I fell in love with dental education during my time as faculty at University of Alabama - Birmingham SOD. Watching the progression of students' abilities and confidence is truly rewarding. I am excited to share my experiences as a private practice dentist and practice owner with students to help them reach whatever goals they have set for themselves."

What type of values do you hope to instill in our students?

"Excellence in providing patient care is always the main goal in dental education, but I also believe that dentistry is a highly personal profession that is based heavily in patient facing interactions. I wish to instill in students the importance of empathy and compassion to the overall care of patients and help them learn how to be confident, effective providers who gain the trust of their patients by providing exceptional treatment paired with deep understanding of their patients' unique needs and a commitment to ethical, patient-centered care."
