Faculty Feature: Meet Leandro Passos, D.D.S., M.S., M.S., Ph.D

Leandro Passos, D.D.S., M.S., M.S., Ph.D., has joined VCU School of Dentistry as an associate professor in the Department of Prosthodontics. He joins VCU from University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill. 

With Passos comes a wealth of knowledge in many aspects of dentistry. Passos received his D.D.S. from Universidade Federal Fluminense in Rio de Janeiro, Brazil. He earned his Masters of Science from both Universidade Federal Fluminense and UNC Chapel Hill, as well as certifications in Prosthodontics and and Operative Dentistry. He acquired a Ph.D. in Operative Dentistry from Universidade do Estado do Rio de Janeiro as well. 

We took some time to catch up with Dr. Passos as he settles into his new role at VCU. 

1. What impresses you most about the VCU School of Dentistry?
"I’m impressed by VCU’s strong academic foundation, commitment to innovation, and collaborative spirit. The school embraces new technology while remaining focused on clinical excellence and community impact."

2. Why did you choose to be an oral health provider and educator?
"Dentistry allows me to combine clinical care, problem-solving, technology, and compassion. Early in my career, I discovered a passion for teaching and research. Becoming an educator has enabled me to share knowledge, mentor future dental professionals, and contribute to the advancement of clinical practice through evidence-based approaches. It’s a privilege to be part of a profession that merges hands-on artistry with impactful education."

3. Can you describe your goals at VCU School of Dentistry?
"At VCU, my primary goal is to contribute to the advancement of prosthodontics through cutting-edge research, interdisciplinary collaboration, and high-impact teaching. I aim to foster innovation in digital dentistry and CAD/CAM technologies, support student growth, and help shape a new generation of clinicians who are both technically skilled and ethically grounded. Ultimately, I want to help solidify VCU’s reputation as a leader in dental education and research."

4. What is your favorite part of your job?
"My favorite part is mentoring students—watching them grow into confident, competent professionals is incredibly rewarding. I also enjoy engaging in research that pushes the boundaries of what’s possible in restorative and digital dentistry. Whether it’s developing a new workflow, solving a clinical challenge, or presenting at conferences, I find great joy in the continuous pursuit of excellence and innovation."
