VCU Department of Periodontics' national prominence on display at AAP Annual Meeting

The VCU Department of Periodontics recently traveled to Austin, Texas for the American Academy of Periodontology (AAP) Annual Meeting.

The event, held November 9 - 12, brought together our full-time and part-time faculty, as well as our dedicated residents, in an enriching and inspiring experience. The event was also a great opportunity for the department to reconnect with our VCU Periodontics alumni, fostering a sense of community and collaboration.

The department made a strong presence in several aspects of the event, particularly in the poster and research competitions. Dr. Sarang Saadat (Class of 2023) emerged as a finalist in the prestigious Balint Orban Research Competition with his work titled "Histone Acetylation in Periodontal Diseases."

A heartfelt congratulations to Dr. Saadat and his mentor Dr. Zhao Lin, for the remarkable achievement. In addition, our full-time faculty, Drs. Luciano Andrada and Rafael Amorim Cavalcanti de Siqueira were recognized by the Periodontics Foundation for their substantial contributions to the field of periodontology.

Dr. Andrada received the AAP Foundation Fellowship to the Institute for Teaching and Learning in the Health Professions and Dr. Siqueira won the AAP Foundation Teaching Fellowship.

The AAP Annual Meeting in Austin was a big success for the Department of Periodontics. The experience was not only scientifically stimulating but also provided a platform for our team to shine and be recognized on a national level. We look forward to incorporating the knowledge gained and the connections made into our ongoing efforts to advance periodontics at VCU.
