VCU School of DentistryVCU School of Dentistry receives reaccreditation by CODA
VCU School of Dentistry has received reaccreditation by the Commission on Dental Accreditation (CODA).
CODA is nationally recognized by the U.S. Department of Education as the agency that accredits dental education programs. Every seven years, it performs a comprehensive review of each dental school’s programs to evaluate and assess their quality.
A committee conducted VCU School of Dentistry’s CODA site visit on October 7 – 9, 2025.
In a formal report released in February, the School of Dentistry was granted full accreditation through 2032, with no recommendations or reporting requirements for the dental program, dental hygiene program and advanced dental education programs in endodontics, orthodontics and dentofacial orthopedics, pediatric dentistry, and periodontics.
The designation means the school met or exceeded all national standards, the best outcome that can be achieved by a dental school.
“Receiving CODA re-accreditation without reporting requirements is a major achievement for the VCU School of Dentistry and a testament to the strength of our entire community,” said Jeff Johnson, D.M.D., M.P.H., Ed.D., interim dean of VCU School of Dentistry.
“This success demonstrates the many hours of preparation and teamwork from our faculty, staff, and learners, and I want to especially thank Dr. Sharon Lanning and the Academic Affairs team for their exceptional leadership and dedication. I am very proud of our school and grateful to everyone whose commitment to excellence made this milestone possible. When we work together, we can truly accomplish great things.”
The School of Dentistry maintains full accreditation for its advanced education in general dentistry and oral and maxillofacial surgery programs. The newly established prosthodontics program has received initial accreditation. CODA conducts reviews of these programs on varying timelines.
